Raw Feeding Is Easier Than the Internet Makes It Seem

If you are new to raw feeding, the internet can make it feel far more complicated than it really is.

Spend a little time researching raw feeding for beginners and you may quickly find yourself reading about ratios, organ percentages, supplements, rotating proteins, feeding models, and nutrient calculations. Before long, something that sounded simple starts to feel overwhelming.

We get it.

But here is something we wish more pet parents heard when they were first learning how to start feeding raw.

You do not have to know everything to feed better.

Raw Feeding for Beginners Can Be Simple

Sometimes all of the "experts" get so focused on creating the “perfect” diet that we forget the bigger picture.

Simply introducing fresh, minimally processed food into your pet’s diet can be a meaningful change.

You do not have to overhaul your pet’s entire diet overnight. You do not need three freezers full of exotic proteins. You do not need to spend Sunday afternoon weighing organ meat on a kitchen scale.

And you definitely do not need a degree in animal nutrition before putting raw food in your pet’s bowl. By the way, if someone tells you they are a pet food nutritionist in our area ask to see their credentials. There are only 2 in the state of NC and they are both employed by NC State University.

You just need a place to start.

For some pet parents, that means switching completely to a raw diet. For others, it may mean replacing a few meals each week or adding fresh food to the bowl.

Start where you are comfortable and build from there.

The Internet Can Make Raw Feeding Feel Harder Than It Is

Raw feeding communities can be incredibly helpful, especially when you are learning how to feed a raw diet.

They can also be overwhelming.

Ask one question and you may receive twenty different answers.

Someone says you must rotate proteins every week. Someone else has a spreadsheet calculating every nutrient. Another person insists there is only one correct feeding model.

Before long, you are wondering if feeding your dog requires more math than doing your taxes.

It does not.

There are different approaches to feeding raw, and the best starting point is often the one you can realistically maintain.

Raw feeding for beginners should not feel like an all-or-nothing test. It is a learning process, and you are allowed to keep it simple.

Complete Raw Dog Food Takes Out the Guesswork

One of the easiest ways to start feeding raw is to choose a complete raw diet.

If you are worried about balancing meals yourself, you do not have to.

Complete raw dog food is designed to take much of the guesswork out of feeding.

For example, Blue Ridge Beef Complete is a complete diet. You do not need to stand in your kitchen adding a scoop of this, a teaspoon of that, and three supplements you ordered after watching a two-hour video about canine nutrition.

Thaw it.

Portion it.

Put it in the bowl.

That is it.

For many people switching their dog to raw food, starting with a complete diet is one of the easiest ways to become comfortable with the process.

You can learn more as you go without feeling like every bowl has to be built from scratch.

Do Not Let Perfect Get in the Way of Better

This may be the most important thing we can tell anyone learning how to start feeding raw.

You do not have to be perfect to start making better choices for your pet.

Pet parents sometimes delay switching to a raw diet for months or even years because they are afraid they will do something wrong.

Meanwhile, they continue feeding the same food they already want to replace.

Give yourself permission to learn as you go.

You can't mess it up. Really!

Start with a complete raw food or not! Ask questions if you need to. Most importantly pay attention to your pet. Learn what proteins they enjoy and what works well for their body.

You can always learn more later.

The goal is not to become a raw feeding expert overnight.

The goal is to take the next step.

Your Pet Is Not Checking Your Feeding Ratios

Your dog is not standing beside the bowl wondering whether you have read enough books about raw feeding.

Your cat is not checking whether you belong to the right Facebook group.

They know what matters to them.

There is real food in the bowl.

And they are probably wondering why you are taking so long to put it down.
