Raw feeding is gaining popularity among pet parents, but with its rise comes a flood of misconceptions. Let’s set the record straight and debunk 10 common myths about raw feeding.

1. Myth: Raw Feeding Is Dangerous for Pets

Debunked: Many believe that raw food contains harmful bacteria that could harm pets. However, pets have stronger stomach acids and shorter digestive tracts than humans, making them well-equipped to handle raw food. Proper handling and sourcing high-quality meat reduce risks significantly. Kibble also contains harmful bacteria and the “human grade” meat purchased in your local grocery store is allowed to have a higher level of bacteria than pet food!

2. Myth: Raw Food Is Too Expensive

Debunked: While raw food can cost more upfront, it can save money in the long run by reducing vet bills associated with health issues from processed foods. Unifour Natural Pet Foods offers very competitive pricing for your pet food needs. We want everyone to be able to feed a species-specific diet! One of the only kibbles I would feed my pets costs WAY more than feeding a raw diet.

3. Myth: It’s Not a Complete Diet

Debunked: A well-planned raw diet provides all the essential nutrients pets need. Many commercial raw food companies, like ours, offer a balanced product that is in compliance with AFCO—BRB Complete.  While the other products we offer cannot be listed as a “complete” diet you can mix and match and get the food that is perfect for your pet.

4. Myth: It’s Too Complicated to Prepare

Debunked: This is one of the reasons I transitioned all my pets to Blue Ridge Beef more than 16 years ago. It’s so easy!  For DIY feeders, planning and portioning meals in advance can make it a manageable routine.  I meal prep for our dogs once a week and it takes around an hour to make a week’s worth.

5. Myth: Bones in Raw Food Are Dangerous

Debunked: Cooked bones are hazardous because they splinter, but raw bones are softer and can be a great source of calcium and mental stimulation. Always supervise your pet and ensure bones are appropriately sized.

6. Myth: Raw Food Makes Pets Aggressive

Debunked: Feeding raw food does not change a pet’s behavior. Aggression stems from behavioral issues and sometimes genetics, but definitely not diet. Pets eating raw food are often calmer due to improved health and satisfaction. I’ve heard many testimonials about people’s pets being more relaxed!

7. Myth: Raw Feeding Is Time-Consuming

Debunked: Many assume raw feeding requires hours of preparation, but that’s far from the truth. With pre-packaged raw meals readily available, feeding your pet can be as simple as opening a bag or container. Even for DIY feeders, prepping meals in bulk and freezing portions saves time and effort. Raw feeding can fit into any busy lifestyle with the right planning!

8. Myth: Puppies and Kittens Can’t Eat Raw Food

Debunked: Young pets can thrive on raw diets! In fact, starting them on raw food early can support their development and build a strong foundation for lifelong health. Puppies and kittens have naturally robust digestive systems, making it easier for them to adapt to raw feeding. Just ensure their meals are properly balanced to meet the higher nutrient demands of growing animals.

9. Myth: It’s Only for Dogs, Not Cats

Debunked: Cats flourish on raw diets! As obligate carnivores, they require meat-based nutrition. Raw feeding aligns with their natural dietary needs and improves their overall health.  Feeding your cat a raw diet is actually more accepted by vets than dogs on a raw diet.

10. Myth: Veterinarians Don’t Recommend It

Debunked:Some veterinarians may not recommend raw feeding due to lack of knowledge or familiarity. However, many holistic vets advocate for raw diets, citing their benefits for pet health. It would be wonderful to have several vets experienced in raw feeding for personalized advice, but we don’t have that many in this area. Simply keep yourself informed and do what you feel is the best for your pets. If they are healthy and their bloodwork comes back wonderful (your vet needs to know raw fed animals’ bloodwork varies slightly from kibble fed) your vet shouldn’t have any concerns about what you are feeding your pet.

Final Thoughts:Raw feeding isn’t just a trend—it’s a return to what pets were meant to eat. By understanding the facts and separating myths from reality, you can make the best decisions for your furry friends.
