My Journey of Adopting a 17-Year-Old Dog

Updated: Aug 28, 2024

I see a lot of posts on several social media channels of all types of animals that need new homes, I’ve volunteered at the county animal shelter, I have friends that foster animals that need homes, etc. I have learned over the years that God will send me the animals I need, and I do not need to go looking for them. We currently have 3 dogs and a cat, and, in our opinion, we do not need any more animals. God usually tells me differently.

A few weeks ago, I was doing my usual Facebook interactions for my business and saw a shared post of a little dog that needed to find a new home. He was a cute little guy and I looked at the pics and scrolled on. The next day I saw the post again and decided to tag a relative and see if she would like to give the dog a home. She didn’t even acknowledge I had tagged her--HAHA! For 2 weeks I could not get this dog out of my head. I would check the post every couple of days to see if anyone had given him a home or if there had been any additional comments indicating someone might take him.

Here’s the thing--we are not little dog people. We have had great danes for almost 30 years and the smallest dog we had was a 16 pound rat terrier/chihuahua mix that was our daughter’s that we loved but we wouldn’t exactly call her a favorite. Sorry, little dog people.

The more days that went by the more I thought of this little dog so despite my husband and all 3 adult children telling me I shouldn’t, I finally sent a message inquiring about him. His owner contacted me the next day. She explained he is a poodle/Pomeranian, less than 10 pounds, 17 years old, has bad teeth, cataracts, hearing loss, and has to go out in the middle of the night. After hearing all of his issues I told her, “God has decided he needs to be in our home and although I don’t know why at this time I cannot question this decision any longer so to bring him to us.”

He arrived at 4pm that same day during a terrible rainstorm with all of his belongings. His owner left and I promised to send pics and keep her updated.

I decided to share this journey with you in the hope that maybe it will encourage you to adopt an elderly dog -- or maybe it will convince you otherwise. HA! I’m not sure what I have gotten myself into!
